Solicitors Qualifying Exams - SQE
What is SQE ? ; Route to Become English Solicitor
(After September 2021, you will have to sit and pass the SQE in order to qualify, regardless of your chosen route to qualification as a solicitor. You would need a degree as entry requirement. We offer individual SQE Course and also SQE in a Law Degree such as LLB Legal Practice and LLM Legal Practice.)

You Looking to Qualify as Solicitor (SQE 1 and SQE 2).

You want to have a law degree with Solicitors Qualification (LLB Legal Practice). Or You want to have a degree to sit for SQE exam (in that case LLB Legal Practice is appropriate for you, as you will study the law degree with solicitors qualification)
-
You want to have a Masters of Law Degree with Solicitors Qualification (LLM Legal Practice).

An Apprentice, completing your apprenticeship with a law firm.
-
A Paralegal with a non-law degree who has done Qualifying Work Experience in Law Firm or in a In-House Legal Department.

You have a law degree and gained some of your Qualifying Work Experience.

Or if you're CILEx qualified, or a barrister, you can take the SQE to become a solicitor.

If you are a Lawyer in another Country with Qualifying Work Experience, you are eligible for exemptions, BCPS experienced solicitors can help you in successful application. If you are fully qualified lawyer in a Jurisdiction you just need to pass SQE1 and SQE2.
What are the requirements for foreign lawyers to re-qualify in England and Wales?
To re-qualify as solicitors in England and Wales, foreign lawyers need to:

hold a legal professional qualification
-
hold a degree in any subject or an equivalent qualification (such as an apprenticeship) or work experience
-
complete two stages of assessment, SQE1 and SQE2, unless exempt
-
satisfy the SRA’s character and suitability requirements
Fully qualified foreign lawyers are exempt for any qualifying work experience (QWE) requirements.
SQE requirements for Overseas Students ;
If you’re an overseas student, in order to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales, you’ll need to:
-
hold a degree in any subject or an equivalent qualification (such as an apprenticeship) or work experience
-
complete two stages of assessment, SQE1 and SQE2
-
complete two years of qualifying work experience (QWE)
-
satisfy the Solicitor Regulation Authority's (SRA) character and suitability requirements
Degree-level Experience
If you have a degree or equivalent qualification from outside the UK, you can take the SQE if your qualification is:
-
shown to be equivalent to either a UK degree or equivalent UK qualification through a UK National Information Centre (ENIC) statement of comparability, or
-
an accredited qualification at level 6 (or above) of the European Qualifications Framework
SQE Exam Overview
The Solicitors Qualifying Examination, or SQE, is the assessment for anyone looking to become a solicitor in England and Wales.
The SQE is split into two assessments - SQE1 and SQE2.
From 1 September 2021, to qualify you will need to:

have a degree in any subject (or equivalent qualification or work experience)
-
pass both stages of the SQE assessment - SQE1 focuses on functioning legal knowledge and SQE2 on practical legal skills and knowledge
-
have two years' Qualifying Work Experience
-
meet the SRA’s character and suitability requirements
The Assessment Day
SQE1 ;
SQE1 consists of two assessments each of 180 questions. Each assessment takes place on a separate day. Each day is split into two sessions of 2 hours 33 minutes with 90 questions in each session. There will be a 60 minute break between the sessions, during which you may access personal belongings and leave the test center.
SQE2 ;
SQE2 consists of a single exam. In order to pass SQE2 you must obtain the overall pass mark for SQE2. The SQE2 written and oral assessments must be completed in the same assessment window.

The assessments in SQE2 oral are:

Advocacy.
SQE2 oral will take place over two half days. The following table shows the assessments candidates will undertake on each of the days. Candidates will take a total of four oral legal skills assessments.

There are 12 SQE2 written assessment stations over three separate consecutive days. On each day, you will sit four assessments, split across two sessions. SQE2 written takes place over three half-days. You will take a total of 12 written legal skills assessments.

Two of these exercises will be in the context of Dispute Resolution and two will be in the context of Criminal Litigation.

You will sit all assessments in the context of Business Organisations, Rules and Procedures.
Your SQE2 oral assessments will take place in an oral assessment centre, either in London, Manchester or Cardiff. When SQE in Welsh is available, the SQE2 Welsh oral assessment will only be held in Cardiff.
The SQE2 oral assessments take place over two consecutive half-days.

Functioning Legal Knowledge
FLK includes the subject areas listed below. It is assessed by single best answer multiple choice questions over a two-day period. Ethics and Professional Conduct will be examined across FLK1 and FLK2.

Although there is no separate assessment called negotiation, all deliveries of SQE2 will contain at least one assessment involving negotiation. Negotiation may be assessed in either interview and attendance note/legal analysis and/or case and matter analysis and/or legal writing.
